Responsible finance conference 2009, Kosovo

The Central Bank of Kosovo, supported by the EFSE Development Facility and KfW, organised a Responsible Finance Panel Discussion Event in Kosovo on 24 March 2009, which was moderated by Mrs. Doris Koehn, Senior Vice President at KfW.
The event attracted over 60 participants from the financial sector and government agencies and was opened by the Central Bank of Kosovo Governor, Mr. Hashim Rexhepi. Further addresses followed from Mr. Ahmet Shala, the Economy and Finance Minister, the KfW Senior Vice President, Mrs. Doris Koehn and EFSE representative Mrs. Sylvia Wisniwski.
All speakers addressed the importance of responsible finance, especially in times of crisis. They highlighted both transparency and literacy as significant factors for financial institutions to take into consideration in order to avoid irresponsible banking practices happening again.
The event’s panel was made up of regulator representatives, representatives of the Kosovar financial sector and the Development Finance Institution KfW. While the regulators raised the importance of financial supervision and the imperative role of regulators in setting the framework for responsible finance, KfW’s representative underlined the importance of responsible finance from an investor’s perspective, especially since the largest "banana skins” (risks) derive from irresponsible banking. The financial sector panelists further highlighted the role of Kosovar financial institutions in practicing responsible banking, transparency and promoting client education.
During the event, the guests were presented with the client education booklet of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kosovo (AMIK) entitled "How to approach a Microfinance Institution”. The production of the booklet was supported by the EFSE Development Facility.
