Nurturing the sustainable transformation of farming in Moldova

moldova

For Moldovan farmers, sustainable agriculture builds resilience against increasingly unpredictable weather conditions and provides significant economic opportunities.

Greater predictability, enhanced productivity and higher access to EU markets, are all possible with new efficient machinery and techniques. While financial support is essential, farmers also need training to gain vital sustainable farming knowledge and expertise.

GreenFields Academy is bridging the knowledge gap in Moldova’s agricultural sector. We’re working with farmers to ensure they can transition to more sustainable and climate-resilient practices.

Collaborating with local partners, such as Microinvest, the academy helps farmers improve productivity while preserving natural resources. Across the country, this contributes to a more sustainable and competitive agriculture sector.

One such farmer is Bio-Alianta, a North Moldovan crop producer founded in 2008 and located in Ghindesti, Floresti. The company has been an EFSE end-borrower since early 2026 and has benefitted from the GreenFields Academy program since October 2025.

Impact Spotlight

Many farms in Moldova are facing increasing soil degradation, climate change and rising input costs. To counter these threats, Bio-Alianta has been investing in new agricultural technologies and farming practices. These have allowed the North Moldovan producer of cereal and oilseed crops to gradually strengthen its market position.

But technology alone cannot solve these issues. Participating in the GreenFields Academy, Bio-Alianta has acquired practical knowledge on regenerative agriculture, including crop rotation, reduced tillage and improved soil management.

These insights are helping the farm test new approaches on selected plots, gradually improving soil health and increasing long-term resilience. Participation in the program also created opportunities for knowledge exchange with other farmers, supporting continuous learning and adaptation.

The future of agriculture in Moldova is regenerative. Climate change has reshaped the sector, and holding on to traditional practices is no longer a viable way forward.

Our advisory & capacity building support

Initiatives such as the GreenFields Academy complement our financing. We are facilitating knowledge transfer, fostering innovation and building climate resilience. The program brings together farmers, experts and financial institutions, advancing a more sustainable and informed agricultural ecosystem and supporting the transition towards regenerative farming practices.

Donations from our catalytic partners drive the structured training of the GreenFields Academy. This includes expert guidance on soil health and sustainable techniques, field visits and practical, hands-on learning sessions and knowledge exchange sessions among participating farmers.

We welcomed 32 farmers – including Bio-Alianta – to the inaugural GreenFields Academy, all keen to strengthen their resilience, adaptability and competitiveness.

Partnership with Microinvest

EFSE has built a long-standing and trusted partnership with Microinvest, Moldova’s largest non-bank credit organisation, focused on expanding access to finance for local MSMEs and especially agricultural producers. Since the re-start of our cooperation in 2024, we have provided EUR 20 million to Microinvest, increasingly targeting sustainable agricultural financing. Together, we have facilitated over EUR 41.5 million in sub-loans to local MSMEs, and supported over 11,000 local jobs.
